Half Dome From The Valley Floor

I may have posted this image before but I lost it (due to a hard drive crash) before I could upload it to Smugmug. I was able to recover the original files and reprocess it. It is in Yosemite of Half Dome from the valley floor.

This photo is available for purchase at SmugMug along with other work of mine.

Half Dome from the valley floor (winter)

Here are a few shots of Half Dome from the valley floor. Just a few steps can change the foreground tremendously.

Mount Shasta

This is Mount Shasta from the north side from Highway 97 just north of Weed California. I almost did not process the first image because I thought the dirt road was too distracting. I shot one where the road was not as prominent and almost wrote both of the shots off.  I am glad I decided to process the image, you never know what you are going to get until you finish a HDR image. It is hard to tell what all the shots will look like when combined.

Chelan Red Orchard

In the last post I said it was hard to find an apple orchard. Here is a couple I found, I don't know what the little shed was for but it looked like a bus stop.

IOOF Cemetery Grass Valley

The sky seemed pretty ominous when I saw tomb stones sticking up along the horizon I turned the truck around and got these shots. The Cemetery was in the middle of nowhere just north of Grass Valley, OR. I saw the farm in the background and thought that they must have relatives buried here and thought I should include it in the shot.

IOOF is Independent Order of Odd Fellows they care for cemeterys. This is the Grass Valley Cemetery.

Lake Chelan at Night (Winter)

I have been going to Lake Chelan in Washington for almost all of my life. I decided to take a shot of it at night. The first attempt was overcast and I had to wait until the next night. The moon was three quarters (full moon would be the best) so it could light the landscape. I took it from the south side of the lake (hoping to get the north star in the shot) where the legend of the lake turnout is. I wanted to shoot north and make circular star trails. The lake is about a mile wide at this point. So it was hard to make the hills on the other side of the lake big enough in the composition and still get the north star in the shot. The shot is made up of 14 four minute exposures. I had taken 31 but the lens fogged it was 22 degrees outside. It is hard to tell when the lens fogs on from the LCD screen on the back of the camera and you don't want to interupt the sequence. On warmer nights fogging will not be a problem. I was able to sit comfortably and take a nap in my truck right next to the camera.

Prather Hay Ranch 2012

This is Prather Hay Ranch just north of Mount Shasta on Highway 97 by the California Oregon border.  In the first image I emphasized the sprinklers they remind me of my Grandfathers apple orchards except they did not have the wheels. He had to drag them from row to row. When I think of the orchard I can't help but think of when my Grandfather filled the cherry picker with gas and set me loose in the orchard. I was about eight and would eat apples until I puked and then eat more apples. If I got tired of one type of apples I would cruise to another row and start over. My Grandfather said I was better at operating the cherry picker than most of his workers. It was a sad day when my Grandfather pulled out all the trees by hand at the age of 82. They had an article about him and how they were all worried about him. They don't make them like that anymore he will be 97 later this month. I wish my kids could have had made great memories in the orchards like I did. Sometimes it's sad how time changes things. I guess that's why I try to preserve them with photography.

This is the first image I took I wanted to get the hay and the name of the ranch. In the image above I wanted to emphasize the sprinklers, hay on the ground and Mount Shasta.
